Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian side chair dates from 1860 in the Victorian style. The dark brown rosewood frame exhibits ornate pierced and relief carving to the cresting rail and front apron, reeded turned side columns with finials, turned shaped legs, and a turned stretcher. The upholstered back panel and generously padded seat are covered in a pale cream and light blue patterned textile with a braided trim. Measures 109 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 48 cm deep. Suitable as an accent seat in a living room, hallway, or bedroom, bringing period character to a traditional or eclectic interior. The substantial carved woodwork and pale upholstery provide both visual interest and practical seating.

FAQs

Victorian side chairs are armless seating furniture produced during the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901). They typically feature ornate woodwork, high backrests, and elaborate carved ornamentation influenced by Gothic Revival, Rococo Revival, and Neoclassical styles.

Cabinetmakers during the 19th century favoured dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and walnut due to their durability and capacity for crisp carving. Seats and backrests were padded using horsehair, natural fibers, and metal coil springs, covered in damask, velvet, or embroidered textiles.

Authentic 19th-century rosewood chairs display rich dark grain with distinctive reddish-brown hues, mortise and tenon joinery, and hand-carved details that show slight irregularities. Original framework often retains evidence of traditional hand-worked construction methods on the underside.

A carved Victorian side chair functions well as a standalone accent piece in an entryway, alongside a writing desk, or in a bedroom corner. Pairing historic carved woodwork with modern minimalist backdrops or neutral textiles creates an engaging visual contrast.

To preserve rosewood furniture, keep it away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent drying and cracking. Clean the woodwork with a soft microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically, taking care to vacuum upholstered panels gently.
