Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of side chairs dates from the 1900 period in an Anglo-Indian style, constructed from heavy dark brown hardwood with a polished timber finish. Each chair has a tall, upright rectangular backrest centered with an intricate high-relief floral panel, topped by a small carved crest finial and flanked by carved upright stiles. The square solid wood seat is framed by moulded borders above an apron decorated with continuous low-relief carving. The forelegs take the form of carved animal heads with trunk details terminating in pad feet, while the rear supports are plain square-section legs. The timber displays natural grain variations and warm tones across the seat surfaces and carved borders. Measuring 57 cm wide, 53.5 cm deep and 114.5 cm high with a 43 cm seat height, these substantial chairs suit placement in a gentleman's library, a study or a hallway as decorative seating or standalone statement furniture. They provide a sturdy wooden perch for reading or conversation in a traditional interior setting.

FAQs

Anglo-Indian furniture emerged during the British colonial period in India, combining traditional European furniture forms with detailed indigenous woodworking techniques. Artisans utilised dense local timber to produce highly decorative pieces featuring intricate relief carvings.

These chairs are typically constructed from dense tropical hardwoods such as rosewood, teak, and padauk. Traditional joinery techniques, including mortise and tenon joints, are combined with hand-carved decorative motifs across the structural frame and back panels.

Authentic pieces display subtle variations in hand-carved details, natural oxidation of timber on unfinished undersides, and evidence of hand-cut joinery. The significant weight of the tropical hardwood and hand-worked surfaces distinguish period examples from modern machine-carved reproductions.

Carved side chairs function effectively as accent pieces when placed individually in hallways, flanking a console table, or positioned in living area corners. Pairing dark carved timber with neutral backdrops and minimalist soft furnishings highlights the ornate woodwork without overwhelming the space.

Regular dusting with a soft, dry bristle brush prevents debris from accumulating in deep carving recesses. Applying a high-grade beeswax polish annually nourishes the hardwood and preserves the natural lustre, while keeping pieces away from direct heat sources prevents timber shrinkage or splitting.
