A pair of nineteenth-century Anglo-Indian side chairs made from dark brown padauk wood in the Victorian and Gothic style. The pieces display extensive carved detail throughout, including pierced openwork floral backrests, foliate scrolls, carved aprons, foliage-detailed cabriole legs, and scroll feet. The frames are sturdy and without breakages, recently recovered in vibrant pink and orange patterned Indian silk by Malabar with a decorative brass stud trim along the seat edge. Each chair measures 89 cm high by 50 cm wide and 49 cm deep, with a seat height of 45 cm. These dining or side chairs suit residential settings such as a living room, hallway, or bedroom, bringing decorative presence and functional seating to an interior. The rich dark timber pairs with the bright pink and orange upholstery to create a strong visual contrast, while the open backrests and cabriole legs maintain a traditional silhouette suitable for daily use or display.

Anglo-Indian furniture emerged during the British colonial period in India, combining Western European furniture profiles with traditional Indian artisan carving techniques, dense native hardwoods, and detailed openwork motifs.

These pieces are predominantly crafted from dense native tropical hardwoods such as padauk, teak, or rosewood, which allowed woodworkers to execute intricate pierced carving without compromising structural integrity.

Authentic period examples feature heavy timber, deeply undercut floral or foliate hand-carving, traditional joinery techniques, and European silhouettes adapted with indigenous decorative patterns.

A pair of carved side chairs functions as architectural accent seating in a hallway, entryway, or dining space, offering visual texture and contrast against contemporary backdrop elements.

Maintain the hardwood by applying clear beeswax once or twice a year, keeping the wood away from direct heat sources, and using a soft-bristle brush to remove dust from detailed carved areas.
