This large nineteenth-century French provincial mirror takes the form of a tall, upright rectangular looking glass housed in a substantial wooden frame. The piece displays a distressed pale grey painted finish with linear wooden mouldings running along the outer edges, revealing hints of timber beneath the worn surface. A bevelled edge frames the central mercury glass plate, complemented by original backboards secured to the rear. Practical measurements span 190 cm high by 111 cm wide with a shallow 3 cm depth. Positioned upright on the floor against a wall or suspended within a hallway, drawing room or bedroom, the mirror anchors an empty corner and reflects natural light around the space. The understated French chateau aesthetic integrates easily into both traditional period homes and contemporary rustic interiors, offering a functional architectural presence.

Nineteenth-century French painted mirrors are defined by carved timber frames, soft painted patinas, and classical moulding profiles created to enhance light within period interiors.

Frames were typically constructed from solid softwoods or hardwoods, coated with a gesso base, hand-painted or gilded, and fitted with silvered glass plates.

Authentic pieces feature backboards made of hand-sawn timber, evidence of historical oxidisation on the glass plate, and natural wear through paint layers down to the gesso.

Place the mirror leaning against a wall in a living area or entry hall, or mount it opposite a window to reflect natural light and create visual depth.

Dust the frame with a dry soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or chemical sprays on the painted finish, and wipe the glass with a slightly damp microfiber cloth.
