This large nineteenth-century French Neoclassical mirror is executed in carved wood with an off-white painted finish and an original bevelled glass plate. Architectural details comprise fluted columns with Corinthian capitals flanking the glass, a decorative moulded cornice at the top, and a carved floral garland centered on the upper frieze. Signs of age appear in the weathered, distressed character of the pale paintwork across the timber frame and plinth blocks. Measuring 190 cm high, 139 cm wide at the top, and 10 cm deep, the piece functions mounted on a wall or positioned directly on the floor. Placement suits a grand reception room, hallway, or living area, where it acts as a striking focal point above a large sideboard or along an expansive wall.

French Neoclassical column mirrors incorporate architectural elements inspired by classical antiquity, including fluted side pilasters, carved capitals, and decorative entablatures with motifs such as garlands or swags.

These mirrors were typically framed in softwoods or hardwoods such as pine or oak, coated with gesso, and decorated with hand-carved detailing before being painted or gilded. The mirror plate was composed of silvered glass.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural wear patterns, minor glass foxing, original joinery such as hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, and subtle layering or craquelure in the painted gesso finish.

A large French column mirror creates a focal point when placed above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or leaned against an empty focal wall to bounce natural light and add architectural dimension to contemporary spaces.

Dust the frame regularly with a dry, soft brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or excess moisture on the painted gesso surface, and clean the glass glass plate using a damp cloth applied carefully away from the frame edge.
