A remarkable set of six Sheraton style mahogany shield-back dining chairs with a Royal history.
The chairs have out-swept uprights within the shield shaped backs, carved with leafy ornament and a stylized sunburst below. The overstuffed seats are upholstered in a rich and luxurious red damask and they stand on elegant square tapering legs with spade feet.
The condition is exactly as they came out of the house, including the dust. One chair shows signs of old repairs to the back where original components have been re-glued. (These repairs could easily be disguised with just a little dark wax).
A unique opportunity to acquire a great set of chairs that were sat in by George V and Queen Mary.
They are believed to have been in the same family since new. The most recent custodians live in Kent but their Great Grandparents (Sir Charles & Lady Cayzer) lived at St Lawrence Hall on the Isle of Wight (now demolished). and once hosted the King and Queen to a garden party. A ...photograph was taken of them sitting on the chairs in the shade and a copy of that photo is supplied with the chairs.
