FAQs

Rococo overmantel mirrors are defined by elaborate, asymmetrical scrollwork, acanthus leaf motifs, and flowing botanical crests. Originally popularized during the eighteenth century in France and revived in the nineteenth century, these mirrors feature curved silhouettes designed specifically to complement the proportions of a fireplace mantelpiece.

These frames were typically constructed using a pine or lime softwood foundation, covered with layers of gesso (a mixture of chalk and animal glue Binder). Intricate decorative details were moulded or hand-carved in gesso before applying gold leaf or paint finishes.

Authentic period gesso mirrors usually display fine hairline cracking across the gesso surface, known as craquelure, due to wood movement over time. Examination of the rear panel often reveals dark, hand-cut timber backing boards and historic oxidisation or foxing on the original mercury or silvered mirror glass.

Mount the mirror directly above a living room hearth or position it atop a hallway console table to create a structural focal point. Contrast the elaborate white and gold carved detailing against neutral painted walls or contemporary minimalism to accentuate the historical silhouette.

Dust the ornate cresting gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid flaking fragile gesso or gold leaf. Liquid cleaners or abrasive polishes must never be applied directly to gilded gesso areas, while mirror glass should be wiped carefully using a dry microfibre cloth lightly dampened with distilled water.
