This Victorian overmantel mirror dates from 1870 and displays an English Country House style. The piece consists of a glass plate set within a moulded wooden frame finished in gold leaf and an ebonised inner border, complemented by carved scroll feet at the base corners and a wooden panelled back. The mirror shows deterioration to the mercury mirror plate alongside signs of age and wear, though the reflection remains clear and useable. Measuring 92.5 cm high by 141 cm wide and 7 cm deep, the frame has an arched top profile. In a contemporary home, this mirror is intended for placement directly above the mantel in a living room, dining room, or principal bedroom. It sits flush or hangs securely to reflect light and expand the visual depth of the interior space while adding a traditional decorative element to the chimney breast.

Victorian overmantel mirrors were designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, featuring flat bases and curved or arched tops to complement the high ceilings and architectural proportions of nineteenth-century interiors.

These mirrors were constructed using pine or lime wood bases coated in moulded gesso, which was then finished with gold leaf gilding or ebonised lacquer, surrounding hand-blown silvered glass plates.

Authentic period pieces display original solid wood backboards, natural foxing or oxidisation marks on the glass plate, and slight craquelure or age wear on the gilded gesso surface.

Positioning an arched overmantel mirror above a clean-lined modern fireplace or atop a dining room sideboard creates architectural focal points and reflects natural light across contemporary living spaces.

Dust the giltwood frame gently with a dry soft brush or microfibre cloth, keeping moisture and liquid cleaners away from water-gilded surfaces to prevent dissolution of the historic finish.
