This nineteenth-century Anglo-Indian Colonial armchair is an imposing seating piece in solid ebony with a dark brown finish. The frame incorporates an intricately carved floral cresting rail, a woven cane backrest and seat, scrolled acanthus leaf armrests, and turned legs fitted with original brass castors. Visible signs of age include a broken cane section on the seat requiring attention. Measuring 102 cm high, 64 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, the chair functions practically as a statement seat in a traditional gentleman's library, study, or drawing room. Built in Ceylon during the nineteenth century, the chair displays deep relief carvings along the frieze and upright posts, alongside fluted columnar turnings above the brass castors. The canted backrest supports the woven cane panel between fluted side supports, while the arms terminate in carved volutes above columnar balusters. The seat sits at a height of 42 cm with a width of 49 cm and a depth of 52 cm. It suits placement as a standalone reading chair or desk seat within a period interior setting.

Ceylonese colonial armchairs combine traditional European furniture silhouettes with regional craftsmanship, featuring dense indigenous timbers, detailed floral relief carvings, and woven cane panels designed for ventilation in tropical climates.

These armchairs were typically constructed from dark native hardwoods such as ebony, calamander, or teak, combined with split rattan cane for the backrest and seat, and fitted with brass castors.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved decorative motifs, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, natural timber oxidisation beneath structural joints, and genuine hand-woven cane work across the frame.

Place the armchair alongside contemporary minimalist decor, neutral linen textiles, or simple side tables to allow the intricate dark wood carving and woven texture to serve as a focal point.

Maintain the cane by lightly misting it with water periodically to prevent brittleness, keep the piece away from direct heat sources, and apply high-grade beeswax polish to nourish the carved wood frame.
