Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Directoire style furniture emerged in France between 1795 and 1804 as a transitional phase between Louis XVI neoclassical design and the Empire style. It is defined by restrained elegance, classical Roman and Greek motifs, simplified geometric lines, and dark hardwoods such as mahogany and walnut.

Traditional 19th-century French fauteuils are constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, cherry, or walnut, joined with traditional mortise and tenon joinery. Upholstery historically consisted of silk damask, brocade, or wool velvet supported by hand-tied coil springs and natural horsehair padding.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved decorative motifs such as lion heads, anthems, or saber legs, alongside evidence of hand-planed timber surfaces and hand-carved joinery. The proportion typically displays a slightly curved or swept backrest with flat, un-carved frame edges balanced by crisp sculptural details on the arm terminals.

Directoire armchairs work exceptionally well as accent seating when positioned alongside crisp, modern neutral sofas or incorporated into a formal reading nook. Their architectural timber frame and defined upholstery contrast effectively against minimalist contemporary backgrounds.

Timber frames should be dusted regularly with a dry soft cloth and polished annually with high-grade natural beeswax to maintain the patina. Textile upholstery requires gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment and protection from direct sunlight to prevent fiber degradation and colour fading.
