This large Victorian Aesthetic Movement overmantel mirror dates from 1880 and takes the form of a rectangular ebonised wood frame with incised parcel-gilt neoclassical motifs, shaped spandrel brackets, a Greek key pattern, and stylised floral motifs in black and gold. The piece stands 160 cm high, 161 cm wide, and 5 cm deep, holding a wood panelled back and original glass with light foxing. Additional visible details include an architectural pediment at the top centre, protruding corner blocks, and sweeping bracket feet at the base. Position this overmantel mirror above a fireplace mantel in a reception room, living room, or study to reflect light and anchor period interior styling. The dark timber and gold decoration complement traditional and transitional domestic settings while adding functional surface area to walls.

A Victorian ebonised overmantel mirror is a decorative wall mirror crafted during the late 19th century, designed specifically to sit above a chimneypiece. These pieces frequently incorporate dark ebonised wood finishes combined with parcel-gilt highlights influenced by the Aesthetic Movement.

These frames were typically constructed from solid softwoods or hardwoods, stained with dark ebonising lacquer and detailed with gold leaf gilding. The reflective mirror plate was historically made using mercury-backed or silvered glass.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit natural wood oxidisation on the rear backboards, hand-cut joinery, and subtle wear to the gold leaf gilding. Original mirror plates often feature minor foxing or dark spotting appropriate to age.

An ebonised overmantel mirror functions as a visual anchor when positioned directly above a fireplace mantelpiece or console table. The contrast of black timber and gold detail complements contemporary neutral paint schemes as well as traditional dark wood interiors.

Dust the frame periodically using a dry, soft brush or microfibre cloth to avoid lifting delicate gilding. Refrain from applying commercial spray cleaners directly to the glass or frame, as moisture can penetrate the timber and damage the silvering.
