A Very Attractive Mid 19th Century Giltwood & Gesso Overmantle Mirror, Of Unusually Small Proportions, Having Replacement Triple Mirror Plates Within Ebonised Reeded Slips, Encompassed By Well Carved, Elegant, Half Turned Columns To Border.As the name suggests overmantle mirrors were made to sit on, or just above the mantelpiece in large Georgian, Regency & Victorian homes. They were nearly always low and wide so as to fill the space in an attractive fashion. They come in many different shapes, designs, sizes and qualities and this is a particularly pleasant example without being overly elaborate and overpowering. It is also an excellent small size making it much more versatile than many.Overall the condition is very good, with just the expected old marks, scrapes, scuffs and digs which are now blended into the surface around the frame and replaced mirror plates.
