The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th-century Victorian rocking chair combines warm brown mahogany with striking red textured upholstery across its continuous backrest and sprung seat. The wooden frame displays a polished finish complemented by elaborate carved foliage scrollwork along the underside of the arms, curved rocking rails at the base, and panelled side supports. Designed for comfort and traditional aesthetics, the armchair functions well as a statement seat in a living room, study, or bedroom setting. Measuring 99 cm high, 60 cm wide, and 86 cm deep, the chair provides generous proportions for everyday relaxation while maintaining its classic nineteenth-century character. The recent upholstery remains clean and ready for domestic use, pairing with the meticulously restored mahogany woodwork to offer both historical charm and dependable practical seating in a modern home.

FAQs

Victorian mahogany rocking chairs typically feature rich timber frames, hand-carved decorative motifs such as scrollwork, and fully upholstered seats and backrests designed for comfort.

Primary construction utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut with traditional joinery. Upholstery historically contained natural fillings like horsehair and cotton, covered in woven textiles, velvet, or wool.

Look for signs of hand-carving irregularities, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, natural oxidisation on unpolished wood undersides, and smooth wear patterns along the bottom of the curved rockers.

Place the chair in a living room alcove, bedroom corner, or nursery alongside contemporary lighting and neutral textiles to create a balanced contrast between historic woodwork and modern decor.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax paste annually. Upholstery should be vacuumed gently using a soft brush attachment and kept out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.
