This Victorian arch top overmantle mirror combines giltwood, ebonised wood, glass, and gesso in a traditional gold and black colour scheme. The architectural frame features an arched top, an inner carved ebonised moulding band, plinth base blocks, and small turned wooden feet at the bottom corners. The reflective surface displays visible signs of age, including deterioration to the mercury mirror plate with light and dark spotting across the glass. Measuring 70 cm high, 104 cm wide, and 5 cm deep, the piece is designed for placement above the mantel in a living room, dining room, or study. It brings period character to a fireplace setting, reflecting natural light and enhancing the sense of space in traditional and eclectic home interiors today.

An overmantle mirror is a large mirror specifically proportioned to sit above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the 19th century, Victorian examples often features arched upper rims, decorative gesso mouldings, and a flat lower base designed to sit flush with the chimney breast.

These mirrors were constructed using wooden sub-frames layered with sculpted gesso moulding. Decorative finishes included hand-applied gold leaf gilding, ebonised paint accents, and silvered glass mirror plates.

Authentic period examples generally display pine backboards, evidence of square-cut nails, light silvering foxing on the glass, and natural wear or micro-cracking across the gilt gesso surfaces.

Position the mirror directly above a living room fireplace or atop a dining room sideboard. The combination of black ebonised trim and gold leaf provides contrast against neutral, minimalist wall shades.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry microfibre brush or feather duster. Avoid liquid cleaners, water, or chemical sprays on the gilded gesso surfaces, as moisture can cause gilt flaking or dissolve traditional adhesives.
