Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This late 17th-century Jacobean oak bible box displays a warm golden brown timber colour with a notable aged patina on the surface. The rectangular box incorporates a slanted hinged lid, carved vertical details across the front panel, a brass lock plate with a missing lock, and a moulded base. Measuring 74 cm in width, 48 cm in depth, with a height of 30 cm at the back and 20 cm at the front, this practical storage piece brings traditional character to a modern interior. Positioned on an office desk or library table, the box functions as a secure desktop repository for papers, stationery, or cherished keepsakes. The sturdy construction and classic proportions suit a gentleman's study, hallway console, or living room surface where historical style and everyday utility combine. The timeless oak finish integrates effortlessly with existing wooden furniture and traditional or transitional interior schemes.

FAQs

Originally crafted in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, bible boxes were designed to store valuable family Bibles, manuscripts, and writing implements, often featuring a sloping lid to serve as a portable writing desk.

Traditional bible boxes were constructed from solid oak using hand-cut dovetail or pegged joints, featuring hand-carved decorative front friezes and forged iron or brass lock plates.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-planed timber surfaces, irregular saw marks, historic ironwork or brass fittings, natural wood shrinkage along the grain, and wear consistent with age around the base and hinges.

An antique oak bible box can be placed on a hall console, desktop, or sideboard to store stationery or electronic tablets while introducing rich wood grain and texture to a contemporary space.

Preserve the timber finish by applying a natural beeswax polish twice a year along the wood grain, keeping the object away from direct heat sources, and dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth.
