This Regency period armchair by James Mein Kelso exhibits the refined proportions and cabinet-making skill of the early nineteenth century. Formed from solid mahogany with a warm brown finish, the chair features a tall, gently curved backrest and distinctive scroll arms framing a generous seat. The front legs are finely reeded and turned, terminating in original brass castors, while the rear legs display a characteristic splayed kick and also retain their original castors. The piece is upholstered in a pale fabric patterned with dense pink floral clusters and green foliage, finished with cream piping along the edges. The cabinet maker's original paper label is preserved on the frame, identifying James Mein of Roxburgh Street, Kelso. Standing 96.5 cm high by 65 cm wide and 80 cm deep, this armchair functions as a comfortable reading chair or a statement fireside seat in a traditional or period-inspired living room or study today.

Produced during the early nineteenth century, Regency armchairs incorporate classical Greek and Roman influences, featuring sweeping lines, splayed rear legs, and turned or reeded front legs.

Cabinetmakers predominantly utilised dense mahogany or rosewood frames, hand-carved timber details, brass castors, and webbed, horsehair-padded upholstery.

Look for period-correct construction features such as hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, original brass castors, hand-planed frame timber, and maker stamps or paper labels often located on the seat rails.

Place a Regency armchair alongside clean-lined contemporary furniture or near a modern floor lamp to create a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and contemporary minimalist aesthetics.

Keep the timber frame away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement, apply natural beeswax polish along the grain annually, and clean upholstery using gentle, non-chemical methods.
