Early Victorian armchairs from around 1840 are recognised by their generous proportions, low seating position, and deep-buttoned or tufted upholstery. They were designed for informal comfort in country residences, typically featuring turned wood front legs and brass castors.

These chairs were built with solid hardwood frames, usually oak, beech, or mahogany, held together with mortise and tenon joinery. Traditional upholstery utilised coil springs tied with jute webbing, layered with animal hair or wool stuffing, and finished in silk, velvet, or wool fabric.

Authentic period armchairs show evidence of hand-stitched upholstery foundations, period-correct brass castors often stamped with maker marks, and natural wear on turned timber legs. The frame joints will show hand-carved assembly marks rather than modern machine fittings.

A Victorian armchair acts as a tactile focal point when paired with clean-lined modern sofas or placed in a quiet corner with a floor lamp. Neutral velvet upholstery allows period seating to integrate seamlessly into modern colour schemes without overwhelming the space.

Vacuum velvet gently with a soft brush attachment in the direction of the pile to remove dust without damaging fibers. Clean wooden legs with a light application of natural beeswax, and buff brass castors with a dry cloth to preserve their original patina.
