This Victorian overmantel mirror is an English Country House piece dating from 1860. The wooden and gesso frame has a bright gold finish over the original glass, showing authentic ageing and surface wear on the mirror plate. It incorporates an arched top, a carved rope-twist ribbed moulding running along the sides and curved upper frame, and distinctive flat plinth base feet extending outwards at the bottom corners. The backboards are original to the construction. The mirror measures 136 cm high, 137 cm wide, and 7 cm deep. It is designed for placement in a living room, dining room, or hallway, mounted directly above a mantelpiece or on a principal reception room wall to reflect light and add architectural presence.

A 19th-century arched overmantel mirror is a large decorative mirror designed specifically to sit above a fireplace mantelpiece, featuring a flat base and a curved or rounded top section popular during the Victorian and Regency eras.

Victorian gilt mirrors were constructed from wooden frames moulded with gessoa mixture of chalk and binderwhich was sculpted and finished with delicate layers of gold leaf or gilded powder.

Authentic antique gilt mirrors feature signs of light desilvering or foxing on the glass, hand-shaped wooden backboards, and natural surface wear or visible red bole clay beneath the gilded gesso layer.

Position the mirror centrally above a living room fireplace or place it on a wide console table to reflect light across the room and create depth within contemporary or traditional schemes.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or bristle brush, avoiding liquid cleaners, solvents, or damp sponges that could loosen the fragile gesso or gold leafing.
