Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in France during the late eighteenth century under the name psyche, the cheval mirror features a full-length glass plate suspended within a four-legged frame. The design allows the user to tilt the frame forward or backward to provide a full-figure view for personal dressing.

High-quality period examples are typically crafted from cabinet timbers such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, supported by brass pivot pins and friction keys. The mirror plate historically consisted of silvered float glass mounted onto a solid timber backboard.

Authentic period pieces display hand-planed timber backboards, hand-cut dovetail or mortise joints, and heavy cast brass adjusting hardware. The glass may show faint silvering degradation or oxidation around the perimeter, consistent with historical manufacturing techniques.

Positioning a full-length standing mirror near natural light sources or in room corners enhances ambient illumination and creates depth. The warm wood tone contrasts effectively with neutral, off-white, or deep green backdrops in bedrooms and dressing spaces.

Dust the timber framework regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax sparingly along the grain to preserve the wood finish. Clean the glass mirror plate using a mild glass cleaner applied directly to a cloth to prevent liquid from seeping into the wooden frame.
