Exceptional 19thc Gothic Revival Oak Library Armchair of Generous Proportions

19th century
Description

An exceptional 19th century (circa 1835) Gothic revival oak library armchair of superior design, generous proportions and wonderful original patina finished in a deep red faux leather.

This superb library armchair is exceptional in all aspects: design, proportions, choice of timber, condition, original patina, comfort…a very good example of an English library armchair.

The armchair consists of a shaped top rail with central recessed carved quatrefoil with carved recessed panels to either side.

This leads down to superbly shaped arms with upholstered armrests, the finely carved foliate arm supports with open Gothic arched panels and pierced design, the back, seat and rear upholstered in a deep red faux leather.

This leads down to a shaped, moulded and recessed seat rail with recessed quatrefoil decoration to the top and sides of front legs, the side rails also moulded and recessed.

The armchair is supported by an unusual design of tapering leg to the front consisting of recessed arched panels with turnings above and below, the back legs of shapely outswept design all supported on original brass castors.

This armchair is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home - the faux leather upholstery is not original but has been on the chair for a number of years, the chair could of course be recovered in a fabric or leather of choice.

This nineteenth-century Gothic Revival library armchair is constructed from warm brown oak and upholstered in deep burgundy faux leather. The Victorian seating piece exhibits elaborate detailing including a shaped top rail with recessed carved quatrefoils, scrolled foliate armrests, open Gothic arched side panels, and turned front legs finished on original brass castors. The oak frame displays a rich original patina alongside stable construction, while the non-original faux leather upholstery shows natural signs of age through light creases across the seat and back cushion. Measuring 101.5 cm high, 72.5 cm wide, and 81.2 cm deep, the generous proportions provide substantial comfort for daily relaxation. In a contemporary home, this imposing library armchair functions as a statement reading chair in a study, home office, or drawing room. The architectural motifs and dark wood tones complement traditional interiors, libraries, or eclectic living spaces seeking period character. Placed beside a bookshelf or fireside, the seating option accommodates extended reading sessions while adding historical presence to the room layout.

Gothic Revival furniture from the nineteenth century draws structural and decorative inspiration from medieval ecclesiastical architecture. Common design elements include lancet arches, trefoil carvings, tracery motifs, and heavy timber construction, predominantly executed in dark woods like oak and walnut.

These chairs were primarily crafted from solid oak, mahogany, or walnut, chosen for their durability and suitability for detailed carving. Upholstery frequently featured genuine leather, velvet, or wool damask secured with brass studding, resting on turned legs fitted with brass castors.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved architectural detailing such as trefoils and pointed arches, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and natural age patination on timber surfaces. Original hardware, such as brass castors and hand-driven upholstery nails, also indicates period construction.

A Gothic Revival armchair serves as a focal accent piece when placed alongside contemporary minimalist furnishings or within a traditional study. The dark timber and rich leather tones complement neutral paint schemes, exposed brickwork, or classic wood-panelled rooms.

Clean carved timber using a soft dry brush to remove dust from recesses, followed by occasional applications of beeswax polish. Leather upholstery should be kept away from direct heat sources and treated regularly with a dedicated leather conditioner to preserve flexibility.
