This set of six Sheraton mahogany dining chairs dates from the 19th century, specifically around 1800. The timber exhibits a dark brown finish with flame mahogany top rails, complemented by drop-in upholstered seats covered in cream and blue patterned fabric. Each chair features vertical back splats, round fluted and tapered legs with reeded fronts, and carved detailing on the rail backs. These chairs suit a traditional dining room or a classic English country house setting around a formal dining table. The set provides generous seating for family meals or entertaining guests, adding timeless period character and practical function to an interior space.

FAQs

Sheraton style furniture, originating in late 18th-century England, is characterised by rectilinear lines, slender proportions, and neoclassical design elements such as reeded or turned legs and decorative back splats.

Cuban or Honduran mahogany was the primary timber used for the frames due to its stability and grain structure, often paired with flame mahogany veneers on top rails and woven upholstery fabrics.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-tooling, such as hand-sawn timber surfaces, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, natural patination, and minor variations in measurements across a matching set.

Dark mahogany seating can be paired with neutral contemporary upholstery or placed alongside lighter wood tables to create visual contrast while retaining classic structural forms.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a soft microfibre cloth, apply clear wax polish along the grain annually, and position the furniture away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement.
