This set of eight eighteenth-century George III Sheraton design dining chairs comprises two carvers with armrests and six matching single chairs, all shaped from warm brown mahogany with a waxed finish and good original patination. Each chair has stuff-over seats upholstered in cream fabric, shaped and moulded backs set with reeded back splats and diamond marquetry inlay motifs, and nicely turned front legs. The carvers measure 56 cm wide by 43 cm deep by 85 cm high, with the single chairs measuring 50 cm wide by 41 cm deep by 85 cm high. Such a suite suits a formal dining room setting around a traditional table, providing seating for family meals and gatherings.

Sheraton style dining chairs originated in late 18th-century England and are characterised by square backs, slender turned or tapered legs, and subtle decorative details such as reeding and marquetry inlay.

Georgian dining chairs were predominantly crafted from dense mahogany, often paired with hand-carved detailing, timber marquetry, and woven fabrics over dropped-in upholstered seats.

Authentic Georgian chairs typically feature hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, original patination on the mahogany, irregular hand-carved elements, and signs of natural timber shrinkage around joint intersections.

Period mahogany chairs can be paired with contemporary marble or light oak dining tables to create an eclectic interior scheme that highlights historical timber grain and classic architectural forms.

Maintain antique mahogany by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying natural beeswax polish annually along the wood grain, while keeping pieces away from direct heat sources and intense sunlight.
