This 17th-century Charles I joined wainscot armchair is constructed from dark brown oak. The piece displays a carved lozenge back panel with a central flower and floral leaves, a cresting rail carved with hippocampus creatures flanking a central tree of life, and finely turned round finials. Further details include scrolled armrests, baluster-turned front legs, and box stretchers connecting the lower frame. The dimensions of the furniture are 111.8 cm high, 55.9 cm wide, and 43.2 cm deep. Suitable for integration into historic interiors, this seating option serves well in a living room, study, or hallway as a functional chair. The solid construction and original thick timber seat provide a stable seating platform, while the historic carved motifs and turned uprights complement period collections of early English oak pieces.

A wainscot armchair is a heavy wooden chair constructed with a solid wooden back panel, flat armrests, and mortise and tenon joinery. Popular in 17th-century England, these chairs were framed by joiners rather than turners and were held in high regard within household hierarchies.

These chairs were almost exclusively constructed from native English oak, joined using wooden dowels or tree-nails rather than metal screws or modern adhesives. Decorative elements were carved directly into the solid wood panels.

Authentic pieces feature pegged mortise and tenon joints with slight irregularities, uneven hand-saw marks, and natural oxidisation around wooden pegs. The timber typically exhibits deep patination and shrinkage along the grain over centuries of timber drying.

A wainscot chair functions well as a focal statement piece in an entryway, study, or living area. Pairing dark carved oak with modern minimalist decor, neutral walls, or soft stone flooring highlights the sculptural silhouette and historical texture.

Maintain historical oak by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a thin coat of natural beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent wood split development.
