Mid-victorian Burr Walnut Rectangular Shaped Tea Caddy with Key

19th century
Description

A good-looking mid-Victorian, burr walnut-veneered tea caddy. It has two lidded sections and the original lock and key.

After opening the top, it can be seen that there are two sections for tea, each with a removable lid and a small turned bone knob. It features a small brass escutcheon to the front of the lock and sits on four brass feet. The base has been lined with marbled paper with a clear wax finish.

Cleaned, re-waxed and polished. It has undergone some minor restoration to the veneer. Good colour and patina. Again, in good presentable condition.

Aftercare:

Cleaned and restored (where necessary) to a high presentable standard. Periodically wipe over

with a soft cloth. Occasionally, use a spray furniture polish containing beeswax to maintain

its satin sheen. Please don't use a silicone spray as this could have a detrimental effect on the

waxed surface.

Please get in touch if you have any questions.

This mid-Victorian tea caddy presents a rectangular box construction formed from burr walnut veneer with rich warm brown graining and a clear wax finish. The hinged lid secures with an original lock, complemented by a small brass keyhole escutcheon on the front and a key attached to a gold-coloured fabric tassel. Minor restoration to the veneer and a clean patina reflect careful maintenance while retaining historical character. Measuring 14 cm high, 22.8 cm wide, and 13 cm deep, this lidded box provides a compact storage solution for domestic spaces. It sits neatly on four small feet upon a sideboard top or accent table, bringing classic English country house style into a modern living room, study, or hallway as a decorative display piece or practical container for small keepsakes.

A tea caddy is a lockable wooden container used primarily during the nineteenth century to store loose tea leaves securely.

Craftsmen frequently utilised figured timber veneers such as burr walnut, mahogany, and rosewood, paired with brass escutcheons and internal metal foil linings.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joinery, period-appropriate brass lock mechanisms, natural patination on the veneer finish, and visible wear within internal compartments.

These decorative boxes serve as accent pieces on sideboards, mantelpieces, or bookshelves, doubling as storage for small items or jewellery.

Apply a light coat of beeswax polish along the wood grain periodically, keep the object away from direct sunlight, and maintain stable humidity levels to protect the timber veneer.
