Popularised in 19th-century France during the reign of King Louis Philippe, these mirrors typically feature a rectangular frame with rounded top corners, clean lines, and subtle incised or carved decoration, often finished in gold leaf or lacquer.

Original frames were constructed from timber such as pine or beech, layered with gesso, and gilded using thin gold leaf. The reflective plates were traditionally made using mercury glass, which produces a distinctive softness and slight oxidation over time.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-engraved or incised floral and geometric motifs, timber backboards showing period joinery, and characteristic micro-bubbling or subtle clouding within the original mercury glass plate.

Position the mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table to reflect natural light across the room. Its balanced rectangular silhouette with curved upper shoulders complements both classic period properties and minimalist spaces.

Dust the gilded frame gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive cloths that can strip gold leaf or gesso. Clean the glass sparingly with a lightly dampened cloth, ensuring moisture does not collect beneath the inner frame edges.
