This Georgian mahogany cutlery box originates from England around 1800. The dark brown tapered container stands on a small rectangular base, featuring a sloping lid beneath an elaborate pierced fretwork cresting rail. The front panel displays fine boxwood and ebony stringing forming a border, alongside an inlaid depiction of a crossed knife and fork in contrasting light and dark woods, complemented by small corner inlays. Visible details include grain variation across the polished timber surfaces, flush joints, and small rectangular hinge plates securing the lid. Measuring 45.2 cm high, 19.3 cm wide, and 13.2 cm deep, the piece mounts securely to a wall above a sideboard or console table in a dining room, hallway, or kitchen. It serves as traditional storage for everyday flatware while functioning as decorative wall art within a traditional interior setting.

A Georgian cutlery box is an eighteenth-century storage container crafted specifically to hold flatware, featuring specialized interiors or wall-hanging brackets for display and protection in formal dining spaces.

These boxes were predominantly constructed from dense woods such as mahogany, often accented with boxwood, ebony, or satinwood inlays, hand-cut dovetail joints, and brass hinges or mounting plates.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-carved fretwork, period-appropriate timber patination, natural wood shrinkage lines, hand-cut marquetry, and original wall-mounting apertures or interior slots.

Display the box mounted on a dining room or hallway wall, or place it on top of a sideboard alongside contemporary ceramics to create a contrast between historic woodwork and modern decor.

Dust the wooden surfaces with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply high-quality beeswax sparingly to protect the finish, while keeping the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber cracking.
