Antique French Worn Gilt Louis Philippe Mirror C1800 - Mercury Glass

19th century
Description

Antique French Louis Philippe mirror in excellent condition.

It dates from the early 1800s.

It has its lovely worn gilt and bare gesso frame. The reddish-brown colour is the bole that was always used as a preparation layer underneath the real gilt (gold leaf). Much of the gilt has worn over time to reveal this. There are no chips.

It has its original mercury glass, also in excellent condition with no scratches. Mercury glass was not made after 1840.

It has all its original backboards and a wire ready to be hung.

Louis Philippe mirrors originated in mid-19th-century France and are identified by their clean rectangular silhouettes with rounded upper corners, moulded frames, and minimal, restrained decoration.

These mirrors were constructed with solid wood frames coated in plaster gesso, smoothed, and painted with red or grey clay bole before gold leafing was applied over the surface.

Authentic mercury glass plates exhibit dark speckled oxidisation, soft greyish undertones, slight surface distortions, and are typically secured with hand-cut pine backboards.

Positioning a Louis Philippe mirror above a fireplace mantel or resting it on a modern console table adds warm metallic texture and historical contrast to contemporary spaces.

Dust giltwood frames using a soft, dry feather duster without liquids, and gently wipe mercury glass using a dry or slightly dampened microfibre cloth to prevent moisture from penetrating the frame edges.
