Originating in eighteenth-century France, these pieces emphasise organic movement and detailed surface carving finished with gold leaf applied over a gesso base.

Traditional construction relies on hand-carved softwoods, such as lime or pine, coated with layers of gesso plaster. Red or yellow clay bole is applied over the plaster before thin sheets of gold leaf are water-gilded onto the surface and burnished to create depth and sheen.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved timber joinery on the reverse, natural age-related cracking known as craquelure in the gesso layer, and subtle wear revealing the underlying red clay bole beneath the gold gilding. Mirror glass from early periods may also show slight distortion or dark oxidisation spots.
