Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This set of six Victorian dining chairs dates from 1860 and follows an English country house style. Each chair is formed from mahogany with a warm brown finish and features a shaped balloon back, a carved mid-rail splat, newly reupholstered seats covered in a green and white striped fabric, shaped cabriole front legs, and outswept back legs. The timber displays a rich grain, the carving exhibits detailed scrollwork, and the front legs terminate in delicate scroll toes. Measuring 88 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 42 cm deep, these chairs are suited for placement around a dining table in a traditional or period dining room. They provide functional seating for family meals or dinner parties while adding character and historical charm to an interior space.

FAQs

Originating in the 1830s during the early Victorian period, balloon back chairs feature a rounded, continuous curved backrest frame resembling a balloon, typically supported by a carved horizontal mid-rail and paired with cabriole or turned legs.

These chairs were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, held together with traditional mortise and tenon joinery and finished with padded seats in woven upholstery.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-carved details, natural timber patination, period-appropriate hand-cut joinery, wood shrinkage along the grain, and original screw threads or square-headed fasteners beneath the seat frame.

Pairing rich mahogany frames with modern minimalist dining tables or updating seat cushions with contemporary linen upholstery bridges historical woodwork craftsmanship with current design aesthetics.

Dust timber frames regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish annually, keeping pieces away from direct heat sources and excessive sunlight to prevent wood warping or finish drying.
