Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neoclassical giltwood mirrors from the 18th century are characterized by classical symmetry, geometric oval or rectangular forms, and decorative motifs inspired by ancient Greco-Roman architecture, such as urn finials, husk garlands, and fluted borders.

These mirrors were constructed using hand-carved timber frameworks, coated with layers of gesso and bole paste, and finished using water gilding with thin sheets of gold leaf. The mirror plates were historically backed with mercury amalgam or silvering.

Authentic period pieces display signs of hand-carving on the reverse timber backings, natural foxing and oxidisation on the original glass plate, and minor hairline cracking, known as craquelure, in the underlying gesso composition.

Positioning a gilded mirror above a contemporary console table or a minimal mantelpiece creates a balanced juxtaposition between historic craftsmanship and modern interior design elements.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding wet cloths, chemical polish, or liquid cleaners that can dissolve water gilding and damage the delicate gesso layer.
