Overmantel mirrors originated in the 17th century and became widespread during the Victorian era. Positioned above fireplace mantels, they served to reflect candlelight and daylight throughout grand reception rooms while displaying architectural craftsmanship.

Traditional 19th-century overmantel mirrors feature a solid timber frame covered in gessoa mixture of chalk and binderwhich is intricately carved or moulded before applying oil or water gilding using genuine gold leaf.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-carved timber backings, natural cracking or craquelure in the gesso surface, oxidisation or slight silvering loss on the glass plate, and subtle wear to the gold leaf showing the red or yellow bole clay underneath.
