Overmantel mirrors gained popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries, designed specifically to sit atop chimney pieces in reception rooms. Their primary function was to reflect light from candles and chandeliers, enhancing illumination while serving as a central decorative focal point in formal living spaces.

19th-century overmantel mirrors were crafted with a timber core, often pine or oak, coated in layers of gessoa smooth mixture of chalk and binder.
