Set of 6 Victorian Elm Lathe Back Chairs

19th century
Description

A good set of 6 Victorian farmhouse dining chairs with shaped elm seats and lathe backs. They stand on ring turned legs joined by H-stretchers. There are slight differences between the chairs and various different makers names and stamps on the backs of the seats but they go together very nicely as a set.

The chairs stand approximately 34" (86cm) high. The seats are 14 1/2" (37cm) deep, 15" (38cm) wide and between 17 1/4" (44cm) and 18" (46cm) high.

They are in good original condition with a nice colour. There are signs of age and use, some marks and light knocks on the seats, a couple of minor shrinkage splits and a few old repairs but nothing detrimental and they are strong and sturdy. A couple of historic worm holes in some chairs but it has all been treated as a precaution. The chairs have been gently cleaned and polished and are ready for use.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian lathe back chair is a form of 19th-century English vernacular seating featuring vertical back slats fitted into a turned frame, a contoured saddle seat, and turned wooden legs.

Regional makers commonly used native British hardwoods, selecting elm for shaped seats due to its strength and resistance to splitting, paired with beech or ash for turned legs and back slats.

Authentic 19th-century examples display slight dimensional variations from hand-lathe turning, natural leg wear from foot contact, and dark patination in recesses and handle areas.

These timber chairs provide visual warmth when set against clean contemporary dining tables, polished concrete floors, or modern plaster walls in open-plan spaces.

Apply a clear beeswax polish every six months to nourish the timber, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and maintain stable indoor humidity to prevent wood movement.
