This 19th century French Neoclassical mirror is made from giltwood and painted wood, housing an original mercury glass plate within a molded rectangular profile. The frame exhibits a painted inset channel in sage green alongside red bole gilding showing authentic age wear and distress along the edges. Measuring 116 cm high by 85 cm wide, the piece accommodates portrait or landscape orientation depending on the placement requirements. Suitable for use above the mantel in a living room, dining room, or hallway, the mirror brings a traditional French chateau aesthetic to domestic interiors. The muted colour palette combines gold leaf highlights with aged olive and sage green paint tones on the wooden structure, complemented by the mottled reflection of the historical mercury glass mirror plate. Original backboards are fitted to the rear of the frame.

French mirrors from circa 1800, created during the Neoclassical and Directoire periods, feature architectural molding, restrained gilded profiles, and subtle painted accents that reflect historic symmetry.

Traditional late 18th-century mirrors utilised a tin and mercury amalgam backing applied to plate glass, set within hand-carved timber frames prepared with layers of gesso and gold leaf.

Authentic mercury glass displays a characteristic gentle shimmer, minor clouding, or dark speckling across the silvered layer, alongside timber backing boards showing natural age-related movement.

Positioning a giltwood mirror above a contemporary console table or fireplace mantel creates a balanced contrast between historical craft and modern clean lines.

Dust the frame regularly with a soft, dry brush or cloth, ensuring no liquid polishes or water come into contact with water-gilded gesso or fragile painted surfaces.
