Large Antique Georgian Period Mahogany Parcel Gilt Mirror

19th century
Description

A stunning original large antique Georgian period mahogany parcel gilt mirror. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1800-1820 period.

It is beautifully designed and of amazing quality. The frame has fantastic, crisp gilt carving throughout, including a very impressive eagle at the top. It also has plenty of beautifully detailed parcel gilt on the sides.

This is in lovely condition for its age, we have had the frame re-polished and the gilding has also been professionally touched up. There is plenty of patina and charm, with no real damage to be seen. There is also a little wear to the silvered backing of the mirror, which looks as if it is the original glass.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian parcel gilt mirrors combine polished hardwoods, such as mahogany or walnut, with selective gilded decorative carvings including eagle crestings and side garlands. Popular in the 18th century, these mirrors blend classical symmetry with rich timber tones.

These mirrors were constructed using dense mahogany timber with hand-carved wood elements, coated in gesso and finished with gold leaf gilding. The glass plates were historically hand-blown and backed with mercury or early silvering methods.

Authentic pieces show period-accurate joinery on the backboard, natural oxidisation on the gilded leafing, and subtle irregularity in hand-carved details. Older mirror plates often exhibit gentle desilveration or light foxing around the edges.

Position the mirror above a formal console table, fireplace mantlepiece, or in an entryway to anchor the space. The warm timber and gold tones pair effectively with neutral schemes as well as traditional dark wall colours.

Clean the frame by light dusting with a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent stripping fragile gold leafing. Avoid liquid cleaners on gilt or raw wood areas, applying glass cleaner cautiously only via a soft cloth directly to the glass plate.
