Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A captains chair, often associated with the smokers bow design, is a low-backed armchair featuring a thick horseshoe-shaped armrail supported by turned spindles. Originally designed in the nineteenth century for commercial, maritime, and office environments, these chairs offered sturdy construction and ergonomic comfort for long periods of sitting.

Traditional English captains chairs typically feature a solid elm saddle seat combined with turned legs, spindles, and armrests crafted from beech, ash, or oak. Elm was favoured for seats due to its interlocking grain, which prevented splitting when hollowed out and shaped.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples feature hand-turned spindles, wedge-jointed construction, and deep natural wear patterns on the seat rail and footrests. Look for visible grain variations in solid wood construction, along with historical signs of hand-planing or slight structural asymmetry.

An antique wooden captains chair functions effectively as a focal desk chair in a home office, study, or library nook. Its warm timber tones contrast cleanly against minimal contemporary desks, stone flooring, or neutral wall paint.

Preserve the timber by applying a natural beeswax polish twice a year to nourish the wood and maintain its patina. Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and radiator units to prevent the joints from drying out and timber from shrinking.
