Victorian Rosewood Kidney Back Chair

19th century
Description

What an absolute stunner! This Victorian kidney back chair is a masterclass in craftsmanship, with octagonal baluster front legs leading to a scalloped skirt, revealing an inverted baluster that seems to terminate on a fine ball. And in rosewood, no less!

This exquisite chair bears the label of John Kipling, ""CABINET MAKER, UPHOLSTERER, & CO, BONDGATE, DARLINGTON""—a highly respected Victorian cabinet maker known for his quality work, and it’s easy to see why. The kidney back features a beautifully carved tulip cross splat, while the seat is upholstered in a rich blue fabric, finished with complementary beading.

Condition Report

In excellent condition, with a historic repair to one of the back legs and a couple of minor scuffs to the front corner moulding - nothing that detracts from its charm. The chair is absolutely solid, good for another 150 years, and the seat is beautifully clean.

The photographs form part of the condition report, so please review them carefully. Further images or a video viewing can be provided on request. Viewings are welcome at our Southampton unit, strictly by appointment.

If you have any questions regarding this piece, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian kidney back chair is a 19th-century seating design distinguished by a gently curved top rail and backrest frame that mimics the natural contour of a kidney, providing ergonomic support while reflecting the soft organic lines favoured during the mid-to-late Victorian era.

Victorian side chairs were constructed from dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, featuring hand-turned or carved legs, webbing, horsehair padding, and seat coverings made from heavy woven fabrics like velvet, damask, or needlepoint.

Authentic period rosewood exhibits a distinct dark, rich grain pattern with deep brown and black striations. Traditional joinery, hand-planed undersides, natural age-related patination, and hand-stitched trim details help confirm authenticity.

A single Victorian side chair can serve as an accent piece in a modern bedroom, positioned beside a hallway console, or placed at an office desk, providing visual texture and historic contrast against minimalist backdrops.

Dust the timber framework regularly with a dry lint-free cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically to retain the woods lustre. Protect the frame from direct heat and sunlight, and clean velvet upholstery using a gentle vacuum attachment.
