ColourDark Brown
MotifsFloral marquetry, Turned spindles, Integrated display shelves, Pediment cresting

This Edwardian wall mirror is constructed from dark brown timber with contrasting light wood floral marquetry and boxwood inlay throughout the frame. The architectural design incorporates a shaped pediment cresting at the top, supported by turned side columns and finials, alongside two integrated display shelves positioned above and below the central glass mirror plate. Decorative scrolling foliage patterns adorn the side brackets, while a swag frieze runs horizontally along the upper section. The piece measures 47 cm high, 43 cm wide, and 18 cm deep, presenting a compact profile suited to limited wall spaces. In a contemporary home, this mirror functions effectively in an entrance hallway for final appearance checks before leaving the house, or in a bedroom above a dressing table or small chest. The lower shelf accommodates small display items, decorative trinkets, or everyday pocket contents, while the upper shelf provides additional surface space. The traditional aesthetic complements period interiors, country house schemes, and character hallways, hanging securely on a wall to add both reflective glass and decorative inlaid detail to the room.

FAQs

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, cabinetmakers produced decorative wall mirrors incorporating classical marquetry, turned side supports, and small shelves designed for displaying porcelain or small items.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from dark hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, detailed with light boxwood or satinwood floral marquetry and silvered mirror glass.

Authentic period examples feature genuine wood veneer inlays cut flush into the solid timber frame, historic joinery on the reverse, and minor natural oxidisation or foxing on the original glass.

Mount the mirror in an entryway above a console table or in a hallway, using the integrated shelves to display minimal modern ceramics or small potted plants to balance the decorative woodwork.

Dust the woodwork regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish along the grain, taking care to apply glass cleaner directly to a cloth rather than the wooden frame.
