Lee Wright Antiques & Interiors Ltd has dated this Mahogany Gainsborough Library Armchair to the 18th Century.
Large 18th Century English Mahogany Gainsborough Chair in Red Leather.
The arms with carved decoration consisting of a combination of rococo and neoclassical period motifs with repeating geometric diamond patterns and rosettes. The carving is in very high relief, always a sign of fine quality, and the combination of motifs from two design movements suggests a transitional piece produced early in the so-called "Adam period". The chair has simple square sectioned legs joined with an H stretcher, the timber all of great quality and with a lovely colour. A good model.
