Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Gainsborough armchair, also known as a library chair, is a type of English wide-backed armchair originating in the 18th century during the Georgian period. It typically features a tall upholstered back, open padded arms, and an exposed timber frame.

George II armchairs were predominantly constructed using dense mahogany or walnut timber for the visible framework. Secondary timbers such as beech or pine formed the interior frame, which was stuffed with horsehair and covered in woven fabrics.

Authentic George II pieces feature characteristic mid-18th-century construction techniques, including hand-cut joinery, pegged mortise and tenon joints, and natural oxidation on timber undersides. Period-appropriate iron fixings or early brass castors are also common indicators.

A Georgian library chair functions as a focal point alongside contemporary living room furniture or within a dedicated reading corner. Pairing the historic timber silhouette with contemporary textured upholstery creates visual interest in modern spaces.

Exposed mahogany components require application of a high-grade beeswax polish along the grain to maintain moisture and patina. Upholstery should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading and dusted regularly with a soft vacuum attachment.
