Pair of Antique Leather Wing Back Armchairs

1900 - 1920
Description

A magnificent pair of antique leather wing back armchairs, possibly the finest pair we have come across. They were made in England, and they date from around the 1920’s.

They are of very impressive large proportions, the quality is absolutely amazing and they are extremely comfortable.

They sit on beautifully carved walnut bases, with well shaped scrolled out arms, scrolled back wings and scrolled hump back head rests.

We have had them fully re-upholstered in high quality leather, they have been hand coloured to a gorgeous brown tone. The seat cushions are double sided with leather and are feather filled. The bases have also been stripped and re-polished, the condition is superb throughout.

The cushions are quite plump right now, because there are a lot of feathers inside, however they will flatten over time.

Please check the proportions.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Wingback armchairs originated in late seventeenth-century England, featuring side wings designed to trap heat from open fireplaces and protect sitters from cold draughts. Over time, the design evolved into a staple of high-end library and lounge seating, prized for its ergonomic support and imposing silhouette.

Traditional wingback armchairs were crafted with solid hardwood frames, such as beech or mahogany, joined using mortise and tenon carpentry. Upholstery materials historically included full-grain leather or heavyweight fabrics over coil springs, horsehair padding, and hand-tacked brass studding.

Authentic period leather armchairs exhibit natural surface wear, uneven patination, and hand-stitched seams rather than uniform machine stitching. Frame inspection often reveals hand-carved wood details, dowel joinery, and natural oxidisation on older iron or brass fixings.

Leather wingback armchairs act as grounding anchor pieces when paired with minimalist contemporary sofas or contemporary wool textiles. Placing a pair opposite a modern coffee table or within a dedicated reading alcove balances classic heritage craftsmanship with modern design elements.

Maintain aged leather by applying a specialist leather balm annually to prevent drying and cracking. Keep the chairs away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and clean wood carving with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust without stripping the natural wax finish.
