Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The captains chair, also commonly known as a smokers bow chair, gained widespread popularity during the 19th century in Britain. Originally used in offices, libraries, public houses, and maritime settings, the low-backed design allowed the sitter to sit comfortably for long periods while maintaining freedom of movement.

These chairs were typically constructed using native English hardwoods. The thick saddle seats were commonly carved from dense elm timber due to its water resistance and prominent figure, while the turned spindles, legs, and steam-bent arm rails were made from ash, beech, or birch.

Authentic period examples feature hand-turned spindles, wedged joinery visible on the top rail or seat undersides, and deeply contoured saddle seats carved from a single slab of timber. Look for natural wear on the stretcher rails where feet rested and genuine patination around the armrests.

A traditional captains chair works effectively as an accent desk chair paired with a modern writing table or positioned in a reading nook. Its rich timber tones add texture and warmth to contemporary minimal spaces or traditional English country interiors.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the wood grain. Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent the timber from drying out or splitting.
