Description

We have been fortunate to get hold of some truly stunning 19th century Italian frames that we have added high quality 6mm mirror plate too.

These mirrors make incredible features on any wall in a great number of interiors. The design is arguably quite contemporary which is why I love this particular style of frame.

The moulding is incredibly fine and when I spoke to my restorer about these he informed me just how hard it is to make this moulding so it really is a testament to the crafts people of the time that created these.

This example is particularly fine with a strong colour to the faux tortoiseshell giving a fabulous contrast to the ebonised frame.

Originating in 17th-century Italy and Flanders, the technique of combining ebonised timber with genuine or faux tortoiseshell became popular across Europe. By the 19th century, craftsmen revived these Baroque aesthetic elements, applying mottled faux veneers to moulded frames to replicate luxury materials.

Traditional ebonised frames were constructed from dense hardwoods like pearwood, beech, or oak, which were treated with iron dissolved in vinegar or dark lacquers to achieve a jet-black finish reminiscent of natural ebony.
