Originating in 19th-century France, overmantel mirrors were designed specifically to sit directly above fireplace mantels. They typically feature gently arched tops, decorative carved crests, beaded inner rims, and wood or gesso frames coated in gold leaf.

These mirrors were constructed using pine or oak backings, topped with hand-moulded gesso or plaster detailing over carved timber. The frames were finished using water-gilding techniques with thin layers of genuine gold leaf over a clay base known as bole.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut pine backboards, natural oxidisation or foxing on the silvering, and areas where the red or yellow clay bole shows through worn gilding. Modern reproductions often use uniform resin mouldings and flat ply backings.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace or a contemporary sideboard to create a focal point. Modern interiors benefit from the contrast between ornate classical cresting and clean architectural lines.

Dust the frame lightly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or camel hair brush without applying water or chemical cleaners. Clean the mirror glass carefully with a slightly damp cloth, ensuring no moisture touches the gilded gesso edges.
