Victorian Tunbridge Ware Sewing/work Box

19th century
Description

A charming Victorian Tunbridge Ware work box dating from the mid to late 19th century, crafted in walnut with distinctive geometric mosaic banding typical of the celebrated Tunbridge Wells workshops. The rectangular box is decorated with intricate parquetry borders to the lid and front, centred by a matching mosaic cartouche and retaining its original escutcheon to the front (no key).

The warm figured wood displays attractive grain and rich colour, complemented by the finely executed Tunbridge ware inlay featuring repeating star and geometric motifs. The box has a pleasingly simple, elegant form and would originally have been used for sewing implements, needlework accessories, or personal keepsakes. Interior compartments present with silk fittings.

Condition:

Good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with use and age. Minor surface marks, small scuffs and edge wear. Some interior damage. Please refer to photographs for a detailed assessment of condition.

Approximate Date: Victorian, c. 1860–1880

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Tunbridge ware is a style of decorated woodwork originating around Tunbridge Wells in Kent, England. It gained popularity during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for its characteristic geometric mosaic patterns created using thin strips of varied natural timbers.

Victorian work boxes were typically constructed from hard timber bases such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, lined with silk, velvet, or paper, and often featured brass hinges and lock mechanisms alongside decorative marquetry or parquetry inlays.

Authentic pieces feature intricate geometric tessellated mosaic borders made from non-dyed natural woods, hand-fitted interior compartments, original silk linings, and period-appropriate iron or brass locks without modern screws.

Position the open or closed box on a sideboard, coffee table, or desk as a decorative focal point, using its internal compartments to store trinkets, stationery, or fine jewellery.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent veneer cracking, dust the woodwork gently with a soft dry microfiber cloth, and avoid applying harsh chemical polishes to the fabric interior or delicate timber inlays.
