Late 19th C. French Champleve and Gilt Bronze Large Table Mirror

19th century
Description

This beautiful and well-proportioned French Champleve and gilt bronze table mirror is oval in shape and features very ornate detailing around the top and bottom of the piece. The enamelling is predominately blue and cream, and also has a ring for hanging as well as a very decorative stand for the back. It measures 33 cms in height and 22 cms deep with a width of 22 cms. This striking piece would make a fantastic accent piece for many different rooms in the home.

Champlevé enamel is a decorative technique where recessed cells (troughs) are carved, etched, or cast into a metal surface—typically copper or bronze—and filled with vitreous enamel before being fired and polished. Meaning "raised field" in French, the technique leaves the uncarved metal surface visible as a frame for the colourful glass design.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the second half of the nineteenth century, particularly under the Napoleon III era in France, decorative metalworkers revived medieval champleve enamelling techniques. Artisans combined cast gilt bronze (ormolu) frames with colourful enamel borders to produce luxury decorative items, vanity sets, and standing mirrors for affluent domestic interiors.

These mirrors were constructed using cast bronze or brass, which was heavily gilded. The decorative borders feature champleve enamel, created by carving or casting recessed cells into the metal base and filling them with powdered glass vitreous enamel before firing and polishing. The reflective element consists of silvered glass.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hand-finished casting lines, heavy gilt bronze mounts with subtle wear on contact points, and precise enamel work where the colours are fused directly into cast metal depressions. Look for age-appropriate oxidisation on the un-gilded reverse and original metal screw fixings.

A standing gilt bronze mirror works effectively as a focal point on a hallway console table, bedroom dressing table, or living room sideboard. Its detailed metallic finish pairs well with dark matte backdrop walls or modern minimalist furniture to create visual contrast.

Dust gently with a soft dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to remove accumulation from carved recessed areas. Avoid water, liquid polish, chemical cleaners, or abrasive materials, as these can strip the original gilding or loosen the enamel.
