Antique William IV Period Birds Eye Maple Over Mantle Mirror

19th century
Description

A gorgeous original antique William IV period birds eye maple over mantle mirror. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1830-1850’s.

It is beautifully made, with a very thick and finely constructed frame. The birds eye maple has a stunning colour and amazing grain patterns, offset nicely by the gilt wood banding. There are also white porcelain fixtures under the lower corners.

The silvered backing to the mirror is slightly distressed, giving this plenty of character and charm. The frame is in excellent condition, with only some minor wear and patina here and there.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

William IV period mirrors, produced between 1830 and 1837, bridge the transition between Regency classical proportions and heavier Victorian decoration. Common features include architectural pilasters, bold turned columns, gilding, and the prominent use of figure-grained wood veneers such as birdseye maple and mahogany.

Framing from this era typically utilised solid native woods like pine or oak faced with decorative timber veneers, including birdseye maple or rosewood. Intricate elements often featured oil or water gilding over gesso moulding, alongside mercury-backed plate glass.

Authentic 19th-century pieces demonstrate natural variations in the distinct small knot patterns of the birdseye maple veneer. Examining the back board usually reveals hand-sawn timber panels, period fixing nails, and appropriate oxidisation consistent with age.

An antique overmantel mirror can be positioned above a chimneypiece, console table, or hallway sideboard to add architectural structure. The light timber tone pairs effectively with contemporary neutral colour palettes and muted heritage wall paints.

Clean the wood veneer gently using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswaxes sparingly along the grain. Avoid chemical glass cleaners on the mirror face near the edges, as liquid seep can degrade the silvering and surrounding water gilding.
