Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century oak dining chairs typically feature solid timber construction, carved or pierced back splats, and sturdy stretchers connecting square or turned legs. Influenced by earlier Chippendale, Hepplewhite, and Gothic Revival styles, these pieces were manufactured for durability and formal dining settings.

Chairs from this era were constructed using solid English or European oak joined with traditional mortise and tenon joints, often secured with wooden pegs. Back splats were intricately pierced or hand-carved, and seats were made using solid oak boards or drop-in upholstered frames.

Authentic period chairs show hand-planed surfaces, subtle irregularities in tool marks, and minor timber shrinkage around wooden joinery over time. Look for natural wear patterns on lower foot stretchers, original patination in recessed areas, and hand-cut construction consistent with historical cabinetmaking techniques.

Pairing a set of dark oak chairs with a contemporary stone or light timber dining table creates a balanced contrast between period craftsmanship and modern minimalism. Incorporating neutral soft furnishings and understated lighting helps integrate dark wood tones into light-filled spaces.

Maintain solid oak seating by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber grain. Avoid placing items near direct heat sources or in areas of fluctuating humidity to prevent warping and timber splitting.
