This Georgian candle box dates from around 1800 and is made from oak with a warm brown timber colour, showing visible grain pattern throughout. The piece has a tapered rectangular body, a hinged sloping cover at the top, and a shaped arched crest backboard featuring a circular hanging aperture near the top edge. Signs of age include various small knocks, surface cracks, and marks across the wooden surfaces, consistent with utilitarian domestic items of this period. The box measures 49 cm high, 19.5 cm wide, and 19.5 cm deep. In a modern interior, this wall-hanging container provides practical storage suited to a narrow wall space in a hallway, kitchen, or country house setting. The item arrives lightly cleaned and ready for domestic use as a decorative wall pocket or storage receptacle.

FAQs

A George III candle box is a wall-mounted wooden container produced during the 18th and early 19th centuries, designed to hold tallow or beeswax candles securely away from damp and vermin.

These utility boxes were typically hand-crafted from solid European oak, featuring a tapered body, a hinged or sliding lid, and an extended backboard with an aperture for wall mounting.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand-planed joinery, early iron or wooden fittings, natural timber shrinkage over time, and a dark, rich patina formed through historical wax polishes.

Position the box on a narrow wall, in a kitchen nook, or near a fireplace hearth to add historical texture, using it either as decorative architectural art or for discreet storage.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually, ensuring the piece remains away from direct heat sources to prevent timber split.
