This 1910 dressing table toilet mirror follows a Rococo Revival style, fashioned from gilt gesso carved wood with a gold finish and glass. The pivoting oval frame features detailed acanthus leaf carving and a prominent central decorative surmount cresting, set upon an ornate scrolling base with raised feet and side pivot arms. Soft and mellow water gilding covers the surface, highlighting the intricate mouldings while showing gentle historic wear across the frame and stand, alongside a clear glass mirror plate. The object measures 58.5 cm high, 44 cm wide, and 18 cm deep. Positioned on a sideboard top, this piece functions as a practical accessory for grooming routines or as a decorative accent in a bedroom or dressing area. The pivoting mechanism allows the angle of the glass to be adjusted easily for everyday use, bringing a touch of French Chateau design to an interior surface.

Emerging in the late seventeenth century and reaching widespread popularity in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, toilet mirrorsderived from the French word toilette referring to personal groomingwere designed to sit atop dressing tables, lowboys, or chests of drawers for daily preparation.

These pieces were typically crafted from carved hardwoods or softwoods coated with gesso, an animal-glue and chalk mixture, which was then gilded using gold leaf. The reflective glass was mounted on adjustable brass swivel pivots within the frame.

Authentic period examples often display age-related foxing and minor desilverisation on the mirror glass, along with natural cracking or wear to the gesso underlying the gold leaf finish. Examination of the backboards typically reveals hand-sawn timber and traditional fixings rather than modern screws.

Place the mirror atop a bedroom dressing table, a hallway console, or a bathroom counter to introduce warm gold tones and surface texture. Pairing it with clean, modern surfaces creates a balanced contrast between period ornamentation and contemporary design.

Gilded gesso surfaces are delicate and water-sensitive, so dust should be removed gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush. Avoid using commercial liquid cleaners or damp cloths on the gilt finish, and clean the glass separately using a lightly dampened microfibre cloth.
